I apologize for not giving any updates since the Ande Marimba Band tour ended. Things have finally settled into a nice groove here at Jekesa Studio, with three levels of marimba classes all off to a good start (see descriptions below.) Expect more frequent updates over the next 2-3 months, including album news and more classes I’ll be rolling out. I’m also open to requests for what to teach next: more marimba? Hosho? Gumboot dance? F.A.R.? Let me know what you’ve been wanting to learn!
Classes currently offered:
A fun, low-pressure environment for complete beginners to try out a new instrument. Covers basic playing technique and foundational skills, and some easier songs from the common repertoire.
Saturdays 2:00 – 3:00pm. $15 per class, paid monthly ($60)
For those who have some experience already, but are still working on their foundation. Introduces slightly more challenging concepts like rolling/”running” lines, interlocking rhythms, and playing variations. Covers more of the basic repertoire.
Wednesdays 4:30 – 5:30pm. $15 per class, paid monthly ($60).
Meant for students with some performing experience, who are ready to delve deeper into the complexity of Shona traditional music. Focuses mainly on songs from the mbira repertoire, including nhare and matepe songs.
Saturdays 4:00 – 5:30pm. $20 per class, paid monthly ($80).
A great way to suppliment playing in a class or band. Besides marimba, I also offer one-on-one lessons on hosho, mbira (various types), rhythm & music theory, and certain dance styles.
